What to do

Start by deciding on the positions for the walls you want to build, and mark these on the site with pegs and stringlines. If you are building a series of walls, start with the one furthest from your access point for materials, so you do not have to hump barrows from one terrace to the next.

Then excavate a trench for the concrete foundation, ram in a 100–150mm (4–6in) layer of hardcore and top this with a layer of concrete at least 150mm (6in) thick. If you have clay soil, increase the thickness to 300mm (12in) to ensure that the wall remains stable if the subsoil shrinks or heaves with changes in the weather.

Build in reinforcing rods if they are needed as you lay the concrete, propping them so they remain vertical while the concrete sets. Then you can start building.
